Founded in 1917 by Henry Leland, a former manager of Cadillac, Lincoln has been a subsidiary of Ford since 1922 selling luxury vehicles. Leland named the company after Abraham Lincoln, his hero and for whom he cast his first presidential vote. The brand struggled in the 1990’s due to aging designs but revitalized with restructuring and redesigns The Navigator was introduced in 1998 and the redesign of the Town Car (which is now the MKS). In 2014, Lincoln's US sales increased 16%, about twice that of premium market average, followed by another 7% increase in 2015. The increases are partly because of the popularity of the all-new MKC compact crossover.

Current models also include mid-sized sedan MKZ and mid-sized crossover MKX.
